With election season upon us, it’s easy to focus on what divides us. Yet, beyond the headlines and political debates, there’s something far more powerful that binds us—our shared humanity. No matter where we stand politically, we’re neighbors, colleagues, fellow parents, friends, and family members. Taking the time to connect and seek understanding, particularly now, feels more important than ever. Embracing others' stories reminds us that our common bonds go deeper than any division.

This realization became especially clear to me seven years ago this November, when I met Jorge. His story of resilience and gratitude was a powerful reminder that everyone carries a unique journey, one worth listening to. This encounter reaffirmed the importance of curiosity and connection, not only in understanding others but in how we lead and even in how we raise our children.

The Story of Jorge: A Journey of Resilience and Gratitude

On a business trip to Chicago, I met Jorge, my driver for the day. What started as a simple conversation turned into a profound exchange. Jorge, an immigrant from Mexico, had come to the United States twice by the time he was fourteen, each journey fueled by hope and a sense of responsibility for his family.

Jorge's life was marked by early sacrifices. Leaving school at a young age, he took on work to support his mother and siblings, building a future in a new country. Like many immigrants, his story was one of resilience and dedication. He eventually joined the U.S. Army, serving with pride and gaining citizenship. Over forty years, he worked his way from bussing tables to owning two businesses. Yet what struck me most was his deep gratitude. Jorge shared, with tears in his eyes, that he was living the American Dream—a life he had once only imagined. His dream of one day writing a book to help others live the life they desire was a testament to his belief that, regardless of where we start, each of us can shape our own path.

Why Curiosity Matters in Leadership and at Home

Jorge’s story was a powerful reminder of the impact of curiosity. When we approach others with genuine curiosity, we see beyond surface-level differences and connect on a human level. Curiosity builds bridges, creates empathy, and fosters understanding, whether in the workplace, at home, or among friends.

Curiosity isn’t only transformative in leadership; it’s just as crucial in parenting. Children, especially teenagers, are navigating a complex world and learning who they are. For teens and tweens who may not yet fully understand or express their emotions, a parent’s curiosity can offer them the validation, support, and guidance they need to feel seen and heard. This approach is invaluable in helping them develop emotional intelligence, self-understanding, and confidence.

At Work: Building a Culture of Curiosity in Leadership

In leadership, curiosity is a powerful tool for building trust and fostering a positive, engaged culture. When leaders genuinely inquire about their team members' perspectives, struggles, and goals, they create an environment where people feel valued and understood. In fast-paced workplaces, assumptions and judgments often come quickly, but curiosity opens the door to deeper understanding and better decision-making. Leaders who take the time to listen and understand their teams' experiences allow for innovative solutions to emerge, tapping into the collective wisdom of the group.

Curiosity also supports leaders in navigating tough conversations. When faced with conflict or differing opinions, leaders who approach situations with curiosity rather than judgment foster an environment of respect and open dialogue. This approach not only helps resolve conflicts but strengthens the team’s trust and sense of community.

At Home: Guiding Children and Teens with Curiosity

Parenting, like leadership, benefits from a foundation of curiosity. For young children, curiosity helps build trust as they learn that their thoughts and feelings are valued. For teenagers, this practice is even more critical. Adolescents are often in a state of emotional flux, learning to manage complex feelings that they may not fully understand or express. Curiosity offers a way for parents to connect with teens without judgment, helping them navigate this challenging time with support rather than criticism.

By leading with curiosity, parents create a safe space for teenagers to explore their emotions and beliefs. For example, rather than dismissing or reacting to a teenager’s frustration or anger, a curious approach would involve asking open-ended questions: “What’s on your mind?” or “Can you help me understand what you’re feeling?” This approach not only makes teens feel heard but also helps them begin the process of articulating and processing their emotions, a crucial skill in emotional development.

Just as a leader gains valuable insights from listening to their team, parents can gain a deeper understanding of their child’s struggles, interests, and dreams by engaging with curiosity. This connection allows parents to support their children’s growth more effectively, guiding them toward self-confidence, resilience, and emotional maturity.

Building Curiosity into Daily Life

Curiosity is a habit that can deepen our connections with everyone around us, from our families to our colleagues. Imagine taking just a few moments each day to ask questions, listen, and learn something new from those in your life. Here’s how to integrate curiosity into daily interactions at home, at work, and beyond:

  1. Practice Active Listening: Dedicate time to truly listen without interrupting. Let others share their experiences and feelings fully before responding. This can make a huge difference, especially with children and teens who need to feel heard.

  2. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage others to share more about themselves by asking questions that invite conversation. Instead of asking “How was your day?” try “What’s something that made you feel excited today?”

  3. Reflect on Conversations: After a meaningful conversation, take a moment to reflect on what you’ve learned and how it might shape your understanding. This helps you internalize the insights gained and apply them in future interactions.

  4. Encourage Story-Sharing in Teams or Family Gatherings: Foster an environment where sharing experiences is welcomed, whether in team meetings, family dinners, or one-on-one time with your children. This openness helps build trust and a sense of unity.

Challenge Yourself to Connect and Lead with Curiosity

In both leadership and parenting, curiosity fosters empathy and understanding. By asking questions, listening without judgment, and remaining open to different perspectives, we create an atmosphere of mutual respect and growth. When we challenge ourselves to lead with curiosity—whether with colleagues, family, or friends—we make room for deeper connections that transcend surface differences.

Imagine approaching your teen with the same openness and curiosity as you would a valued colleague. By simply asking questions and genuinely listening to their answers, you allow them to process their own thoughts and emotions. This, in turn, strengthens their ability to handle life’s challenges with confidence and resilience. And just as a curious leader taps into the unique strengths of their team, a curious parent helps their child discover their own strengths and capabilities.

Who knows? Perhaps, like my experience with Jorge, you might find yourself deeply moved by someone else’s story. You may discover that by simply listening, you gain invaluable insights, connect on a profound level, and find inspiration where you least expect it. Let curiosity be your guide in all areas of life, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by richer relationships and a deeper understanding of the world.
